SHOCK: Suburban Detroit resident Steve Utash is in critical condition with severe head injuries after he was beaten by a neighborhood mob when he stopped to help a 11-year-old David Harris, who had stepped off the curb in the path of his pickup truck. David Harris is expected to recover from his injuries.
Police said Steve Utash, a tree trimmer from Roseville, was not at fault in the accident. Detroit Police Sgt. Michael Woody said, “A preliminary investigation shows the kid stepped off the curb in front of him. No way he could have stopped in time.”
No arrests have been made in the vicious attack on Steve Utash but Sgt. Woody said David Harris’ father was taken into custody Thursday on an unrelated warrant.
Police have no suspects in the attack. Steve Utash was also robbed of his wallet and credit cards in the attack. Many are calling for the attack to be charged as a hate crime, since the assailants were black and Steve Utash is white.
