Eric Garner, a 43-year-old Staten Island dad, died Thursday after a New York City police officer put him in a chokehold and other officers appeared to slam his head against a sidewalk.
Garner, a father of six children, can be heard repeatedly screaming, “I can’t breathe, I can’t breathe,” a video of the incident shows.
At least five officers took him down when he resisted being arrested in front of the Tompkinsville beauty supply store.
Eric Garner, who is an asthmatic, has a history of arrests for selling untaxed cigarettes. It is not clear why the officers were at the scene.
He reportedly went into cardiac arrest and died at Richmond University Medical Center, a NYPD spokesman said.
