Freddie Gray’s family settled a wrongful death lawsuit with the city of Baltimore for $6.4 million almost five months after he died after being injured while in police custody.
The settlement comes one week after the first hearing in the criminal case against six officers in his death following his injury in the back of a prisoner transport van on April 12.
The settlement must be approved by the board that oversees the city’s spending. The five-member board is controlled by Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake.
Rawlings-Blake said in a news releases, “The proposed settlement agreement going before the board of estimates should not be interpreted as a judgment on the guilt of innocence of the officers facing trial.”
