Mariah Carey’s career was the last victim of 2016 after her epic lip sync fail during a live performance at Dick Clark New Year’s Eve celebration in Times Square.
Carey couldn’t seem to follow along with her own tracks. In fact, she just gave up — completely humiliated in front of millions. Her trainwreck of a performance started to unfold after she sang (or lip synced) Auld Lang Syne. Technical malfunctions that left her struggling to reach notes and to sync the lyrics of her hit song Emotions.
The hot mess continued when she gave up on her signature hit We Belong Together, while the prerecorded track continued to play. That was confirmation that she had been lip syncing. Um, some powerful notes were coming out but her mouth was closed.
Carey seemed to recover somewhat when she first started We Belong Together, but that quickly fell apart. She stopped singing and the prerecorded track kept playing. She said, It just doesn’t get any better,” as she left the stage. After the performance Carey tweeted “Shit happens. Have a happy and healthy new year everybody! Here’s to making more headlines in 2017.”
Mimi has had some diva-ish issues in the last couple years, but nothing on the scale of this public meltdown. She is still trending on Twitter on Sunday after going viral Saturday night.
