Georgia cop Greg Abbott, who told a motorist during a traffic stop that “we only kill black people,” will be fired, Cobb County Police Chief Mike Register said.
Register said on Thursday that “there’s really no place for these types of comments in law enforcement,” adding that Abbott would be terminated, the New York Post reports.
Register said, “I feel that no matter what context you try to take those comments in, the statements were inexcusable and inappropriate.” “Those comments have now caused the men and women who are currently working on the street today to go out and attempt to regain the public trust,” he added at a news conference.
The footage of the traffic stop, which was originally recorded last year, was leaked earlier this week and sparked widespread condemnation.
In the video, Abbott told the woman not to be scared and to put her hands down out of fear of being shot. He said, “You’re not black.” “Remember, we only kill black people. Yeah, we only kill black people, right?” he tells her.
