Lawyers say two Albuquerque police officers, accused of killing a homeless man, James Boyd, last March, will face criminal charges.

KRQE reported that multiple sources confirmed Sunday that District Attorney Kari Brandenburg planned to file charges against Dominique Perez, a SWAT officer, and former detective Keith Sandy, who retired from the department eight months after the fatal shooting [of James Boyd].

Albuquerque has one of the highest rates of police shootings in the nation, but the murder charges would be the first time an officer with the department had faced criminal charges for shooting someone in the line of duty.

New Mexico law permits prosecutors to file charges without a grand jury indictment, although the practice is rare. Source: Raw Story

Andrea Espinosa, 25, of Meridian, Idaho, was accused of punching a police officer after trying to drive away in a stranger’s car. She is facing two felonies. This comes amid a rash of violence against police officers in the aftermath of police-involved deaths of black males.

At 3:45 a.m., police were flagged down by a man near the intersection of West Malad Street and South Orchard Street.

A man told officers that he saw a woman walking along the side of the road, and he had stopped to see if she was OK. When he stopped, she jumped in his car and told him to drive, he told police.

The man said he got out of the vehicle and flagged down police. Espinosa got into the driver’s seat and tried to flee the scene in the car, police said. An officer who was able to open and try to remove Espinosa from the car was greeted with a closed fist to the face, police said. She also allegedly kneed him in the thigh as he put her in the patrol car.

Espinosa’s statements to police “appeared confused and inconsistent.” She was booked into the Ada County Jail. Source: Idaho Statesman

The Idaho Statesman reports Espinosa was charged with “two counts of felony assault or battery on an officer and misdemeanor resisting or obstructing officers.”
