South Carolina Lance Cpl. Sean Groubert was arrested after a dash-cam video shows him shooting unarmed Levar Edward Jones over a seatbelt violation. Groubert is facing assault and battery charges, which could carry a 20-year prison sentence.

The shooting happened in the parking lot of a Circle K on Broad River Road Sept. 4 after Lance Cpl. Sean Groubert pulled Levar Edward Jones over for a seatbelt violation.

In the video released Wednesday night, Groubert asks for Jones’ license. Jones then checks his back pocket before going back to his vehicle.

Groubert then fires several shots at Jones before Jones falls to the ground.

While Jones is on the ground with a gunshot wound to the hip, he asks Groubert “What did I do, sir?”

Groubert then asks Jones if he was hit.

“I don’t know what happened,” Jones says in the video. “I just grabbed my license.”

Groubert explains to Jones the reason he shot at him was because Jones dove head first in the vehicle. Source: WIS-TV

If there was no dash-cam video, Trooper Groubert would have gotten away with committing a crime. Another innocent and unarmed black man would have been a statistic.
This comes as a special grand jury declines to indict officers in the shooting death of a black man, John Crawford III, at a Dayton-area Wal-Mart store in Ohio after he brandished an air rifle.

Victor Marshall Nash Charged for Raping, Choking Teacher at South Dade Senior HS

SHOCK:  Victor Marshall Nash, 18, was charged with attempted first degree murder, sexual battery, robbery and grand theft for an alleged brutal attack against his teacher at South Dade Senior High School last Friday.

Police say Nash allegedly raped and choked the female teacher until she passed out and left the used condom in her purse.

According to detectives, the 6-foot-1, 200 pound teen, approached the teacher two hours after the last class, put his arms around her. When she told him to stop, he body-slammed her to the floor, slamming her head. He then choked her until she was unconscious and raped her.

Victor Marshall Nash threw the teacher’s cell phone in the garbage and fled the school in her car. When she regained consciousness, the teen was gone.

Nash confessed to police after they apprehended him five hours later. The teen’s father, Victor Marshall Nash Sr., who is a convicted sex offender stemming from past child abuse charges, said he was shocked to learn of his son’s arrest, WSVN reports. The elder Nash said, “It’s just upsetting. I never wanted him to go through the things I went through.”

ARREST WARRANT ISSUED FOR JESSE MATTHEW ON RECKLESS DRIVING CHARGE.

Jesse Matthew, “LJ,” has been identified as a person of interest in the disappearance of UVA student Hannah Graham. The Daily Mail reports Matthew admits he bought her drinks but denies driving off with her in his car.

Jesse ‘LJ’ Matthew has confirmed he met the 18-year-old in Charlottesville’s Downtown Mall on the night she went missing and bought her drinks at a local bar. But Matthew, a nursing assistant at UVA Hospital, told his mother that Hannah did not get into his car and that the pair ‘went their separate ways.’

Matthew’s grandmother, Christine Carr, told MailOnline on Saturday: ‘I have been talking with his mother.‘He said he went his way and she went hers. He told his mother he bought her some drinks. He said she did not get into his car.‘The girl went her way and he went his.’ Source: Daily Mail

I would urge caution in accusing Jesse Matthew of committing a crime in Hannah Graham’s disappearance without proof. Richard Jewell was hounded as a person of interest in the Centennial Park bombing during the Olympics in Atlanta and it turned out he was innocent.

Charles Smith, 29, was killed in a police officer-involved shooting in west Savannah Thursday morning. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is handling the case after the Savannah Chatham Metropolitan Police Chief Julie Tolbert made the request. Officer David Jannot placed on administrative leave.

There are reports that a rally is underway in Savannah to protest the shooting death of Charles Smith.

Here’s the press release from the GBI on Charles Smith’s shooting death:

The initial investigation shows that officers arrested Charles Smith, 29, on outstanding warrants.  When the officers placed Smith under arrest he was handcuffed behind his back.  The arrest encounter is captured on video.  After being placed in the patrol car, Smith was able to move his hands to the front of his body and kick out the window of the patrol car.  The officers said as Smith attempted to exit the patrol car they saw that he had a firearm.  This encounter resulted in Smith being shot and killed at the scene. During the crime scene examination, a firearm was found under Smith’s body.  This information is based on the GBI’s preliminary investigation. The GBI will continue to thoroughly investigate this incident to determine exactly what occurred. When the investigation is completed, the findings will be turned over to the Eastern Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office.

An autopsy on Smith’s body will be done at the GBI Crime Lab in Savannah tomorrow.

Mayor Edna Jackson issued the following statement on the Charles Smith shooting:

“I am distressed at today’s shooting in West Savannah that left one man dead, a family grieving, and a community with many questions. I share many of those questions. There will be answers, but for the moment I ask for patience.
Chief Tolbert immediately brought in the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to conduct a thorough and independent investigation into this shooting. That is proper. We must now give authorities time to do their job.

I met today with the victim’s family, and I grieved with them. I spoke with West Savannah residents, and I listened to them. I talked with Police leaders, and relayed our citizens’ concerns while offering support for our officers and the difficult public service they perform every day.

When the answers come, we will be open, transparent and forthcoming. We will remain in continuous communication with the family. For now, I hope the citizens of Savannah will join me in remaining calm and patient as authorities gather the facts.”

Baltimore City police officer Vincent Cosom has been placed on administrative leave one day after Kollin Truss accused him of police brutality that was captured on a police surveillance camera.

Kollin Truss was arrested following a June 15 assault of his then-girlfriend, Stephanie Coleman, which led to an altercation with Officer Vincent Cosom. Truss, 32, was charged with assaulting both Cosom and Coleman.

ABC News:  Cosom, a six-year veteran of the department, noted in his police report that Truss was loitering outside of a liquor store in the 500 block of E. North Ave. at about 1:40 a.m. Cosom wrote that he asked Truss to leave. Truss then walked into the store and shouted an obscenity and a threat at the police officer, according to Cosom’s account of the incident.

Truss and Coleman left the liquor store and started walking across the street to a bus stop. Cosom said he observed Truss push her three times, according to the report.

“When they got to the corner of Greenmount and North Ave they began to argue again drawing a large crowd around them,” Cosom wrote. “While I was crossing the street at 500 E North Ave. to stop [the] argument I observed the unknown black male pushed [sic] the female with open hands three times.

“At this time I went to place the male under arrest he got into a fighting stance and clenched his first. Me and the male got into a physical altercation due to me [sic] in fear for my safety and I received a punch to the body,” Cosom continued in the report, transcribed verbatim.

Truss was arrested, although his assault and resisting arrest charges were later dropped.

Kollin Truss is seeking $35 million in damages, $5 million for each of the seven charges his attorneys have filed against Cosom on his behalf, as well as punitive damages.
