Chicago Teen Cornelius German Murdered Near President Obama’s Kenwood Home

Another teen has been murdered near President Obama’s Chicago home. Cornelius German,15, was murdered Monday night just four blocks from President Obama’s Kenwood home. This murder is a reminder of the deaths of Hadiya Pendleton and Rashad Pratt, who were murdered near the President’s home. Cornelius German, whose nickname was ‘Cornbread,’ was pronounced dead at the Cook County medical examiner’s office at 12:50 a.m. Tuesday. No suspects are in custody. The teen reportedly had trouble at school and had friends who were in gangs, the Chicago Tribune reports.

His mother admitted that her son rebelled against authority and hung out with gang members, but she was unhappy that Chicago police had so quickly called her son a gang member.

“This is not Hadiya Pendleton. This is Cornelius German, a boy affiliated with gangs,” Timika Rutledge-German said. “Police can’t say he was a known gangbanger. He hung with everybody because they were his homies.”

Police officials said the boy had “documented gang ties.” He also had a juvenile record that included arrests for armed robbery and findings of guilt for theft and battery, according to law enforcement sources.

[...]

Though his mother insisted her son was not in a gang, she did not deny his struggles. He was kicked out of Chicago Public Schools and put in alternative schools after he defied authority figures and developed an attitude problem, she said. He hung out with gang members, she added. But just two months ago he had earned his way back into Kenwood Academy High School, to the delight of his parents, who had high hopes that he was finally being given a chance to straighten out. 1-Year-Old Bryeon Hunter Goes Missing in Maywood After Mother Claims She Was Attacked by 3 Men (Chicago Tribune)

Have you seen one-year-old Bryeon Hunter? He went missing after his mother told Maywood police she was attacked and beaten by three men, who kidnapped her son. The boy’s mother and her boyfriend were interviewed by police.

Maywood Police Chief Tim Curry said the boy’s mother said that she and Byreon were on their way to a park Tuesday afternoon when three men jumped out of a black sports car, beat her and took Bryeon with them.

But Curry said that after interviewing the three men the boy’s mother identified as her attackers, investigators concluded her account was inaccurate.

The boy is described as 2 feet tall and weighing 30 pounds. He was last seen wearing a blue striped shirt with bluejeans and brown Nike boots.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Maywood Police Department at 708-450-4471. Source

UPDATE#1 (04/20/13): Just as I suspected, the mother of Bryeon Hunter lied to police in the disappearance of her son. Lakeshia Baker and her live-in boyfriend Michael Scott repeatedly beat her son because he was “crying and whining.” The two rehearsed their story that the child went missing after the mother was accosted and beaten by three Hispanic men.

Lakeshia Baker admitted she and her boyfriend beat her one-year-old son with a belt and plastic hangers and left him to die on their bathroom floor, prosecutors said in court Saturday. They then disposed of his body in a backpack. Scott reportedly dumped the body in the river at 1st Avenue and Lake Street in Maywood. Lakeshia Baker is being held without bail, while Michael Scott is being held on $750,000 bond.

Michelle Obama Says “Hadiya Pendleton Was Me, And I Was Her” at Chicago Fundraising Luncheon

A new right wing freak-out is coming over First Lady Michelle Obama’s comments, “Hadiya Pendleton was me, and I was her.” Of course, they will throw in President Obama’s comment if he had a son he would look like Trayvon Martin. You recall that right wing freak out, right?

“Hadiya Pendleton was me, and I was her,” Obama said at a fundraising lunch for a public-private partnership aimed at giving support to young Chicagoans and making neighborhoods safer. “But I got to grow up and go to Princeton and Harvard Law School and have a career and family and the most blessed life I could ever imagine.”

“And Hadiya? Oh, we know that story,” she said, recounting the life that took the 15-year-old to Washington for President Obama’s Inauguration one week and dead on the South Side of Chicago the next. Source

Rev. Jeremiah Wright’s Daughter Jeri Wright Indicted on Money Laundering Charges

Another prominent Chicago resident’s child has been indicted. Rev. Jeremiah Wright’s daughter Jeri Wright indicted Wednesday on charges of money laundering and lying to the feds.

Jeri Wright is accused of participating in a fraud scheme allegedly orchestrated by former Country Club Hills Police Chief Regina Evans and her husband, Ronald Evans, involving a $1.25 million state grant, the Chicago Tribune reports.

Jeri Wright, 47, was charged with two counts of money laundering, two counts of making false statements to federal law enforcement officers and seven counts of giving false testimony before a grand jury.

The state grant was awarded in 2009 and was meant to train trades people. But that never materialized. A third indictment claims Regina Evans’ brother, Ricky McCoy, of Chicago, was charged with obstruction of justice and witness tampering.

Here is an excerpt from the press release from U.S. Attorney James A. Lewis, Springfield, IL:

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Three indictments returned today by the grand jury in Springfield, Ill., collectively broaden allegations of fraud related to a $1.25 million state grant awarded in 2009 to We Are Our Brother’s Keeper, a not-for-profit program owned by Regina R. Evans, former police chief for Country Club Hills, Ill., and her husband, Ronald W. Evans, Jr., also formerly employed with the Country Club Hills Police Department.

The grant agreement provided for an estimated 40 participants to receive bricklaying and electrical  pre-apprenticeship training and GED preparation, at the Regal Theater, another entity owned by the Evanses.

Regina, 50, and her husband, Ronald Evans, 45, are charged in a third superseding indictment with fraudulent use of grant funds, specifically

  • wire fraud (three counts)
  • money laundering (seven counts each)
  • conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering (one count)

According to the indictment, at the time of the alleged fraud, from February 2009 to June 2010, Regina and Ronald Evans owned various for-profit and not-for-profit entities, including the

  • Prime Time Group, Inc.,
  • the Regal Theater, LLC., and
  • We Are Our Brother’s Keeper (WAOBK.)

In February 2009, on behalf of WAOBK, Evans and her husband applied for grant funding offered under the Employment Opportunities Grant Program and administered by the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO.) In September 2009,

DCEO disbursed the $1,250,000 award for the two-year period, beginning on June 1, 2009, and ending on May 31, 2011. In fact, the indictment alleges that little, if any, of the training provided in the grant agreement, was ever completed.

Following the return of a prior superseding indictment against the Evanses, in June 2012, the grand jury investigation continued relating to unindicted offenses and persons, including potential money laundering offenses.

The investigation included a review of more than$100,000 in checks issued by the Evanses and Ricky McCoy, Regina Evans’ brother, involving grant funds and made payable to various associates of the Evanses, including McCoy and Jeri L. Wright, purportedly for work done by associates under the grant program.

The indictment alleges that more than $60,000 from the proceeds of the checks was deposited back into accounts which the Evanses controlled.

Another indictment returned today charges Jeri L. Wright, 47, of Hazel Crest, Ill., with money laundering (two counts), making false statements to federal law enforcement officers (two counts), and giving false testimony before a grand jury (seven counts), related to the investigation of the alleged fraudulent use of grant funds.

According to the indictment, Wright, a close friend and associate of the Evanses, allegedly received three checks in November 2009, totaling approximately $28,000, purporting to be for work related to the grant, and approximately $20,000 of the proceeds of the checks was allegedly deposited back into accounts controlled by the Evanses.

The indictment further alleges that Wright made false statements to federal law enforcement officers when she was interviewed on various occasions in 2012, and that on Nov. 7, 2012, Wright made materially false statements to the grand jury.

The penalties are pretty stiff if Jeri Wright and others are convicted. For example, wire fraud carries a sentence of up to 20 years in prison; money laundering carries a sentence of up to 20 years in prison; obstruction of justice carries a sentence of up to 10 years in prison; witness tampering carries a sentence of up to 20 years in prison.

Janet Strickland Allegedly Commissioned Grandson William Strickland to Kill His Grandfather

Jesus take the wheel: Janet Strickland, 64, was charged with first degree murder and armed robbery with a firearm after she allegedly commissioned her grandson, William D. Strickland, to murder his 72 year old grandfather, on his way to dialysis treatment on Mar. 2, the Chicago Tribune reports.

After the murder, the two used the money of her murdered husband, also named William Strickland, to purchase a car, home furnishings, tattoos, sneakers and other items, prosecutors said. Janet Strickland’s bail was set at $500,000, while her grandson is being held without bail.

Prosecutors alleged Janet Strickland and her grandson, also named William Strickland, discussed killing her husband on multiple occasions. Before the shooting, Janet Strickland told her grandson that she was “sick” of his grandfather and that she wanted him dead, prosecutors allege.

“She stated … that she wished he was not here and she wanted him gone,” Assistant State’s Attorney Jacqueline Kwilos said during the bond hearing. On the Thursday before the shooting, Strickland told her grandson that she wanted it done on the next Saturday, Kwilos said.

Initially the two had discussed having someone else kill him, but Strickland later told his grandmother he would do the shooting himself, Kwilos alleged. According to prosecutors, Strickland admitted that when she unlocked the door to let her husband leave for his dialysis appointment early in the morning of March 2 she knew he would be killed by her grandson. Janet Strickland has a myriad of health problems herself, so it’s really reprehensible for her to have said she was tired of her husband’s issues. She is currently hospitalized for lung disease and low oxygen, police said.

So much for claims of racism in the Chicago school closings, right? Barbara Byrd-Bennett, head of Chicago Public Schools said that the accusations of racism about her plans to close 54 schools in mostly black areas, insulted her “as a woman of color.” She said closing the 54 schools was made after listening to testimonies from more than 20,000 people at dozens of hearings pertaining to the schools, the Chicago Sun Times reports. You will recall, Mayor Rahm Emanuel came under scathing criticism for the school closures, considering his children attend expensive private schools.

Most of the targeted schools are in the city’s black and poorest communities on the West and South sides, but, Byrd-Bennett said, most CPS students are black or Hispanic, so the closings will affect “children of color.”

“What I cannot understand and will not accept is that the proposals are racist,” Byrd-Bennett said, prompting shouts of “They are!” from the often-raucous crowd.

On Tuesday, parents called on Mayor Rahm Emanuel to try out the often dangerous routes their children will have to take to their new schools, often crossing gang territory lines. Byrd-Bennett, however, said she has no time for adults who use the “excuse of gangs to keep children trapped in failing schools.” Source
