America’s mayor Rudy Guiliani doesn’t think Vice President Joe Biden is “nuts.” That’s after a week of questioning his ‘mental capacity’ for his “put y’all in chains” remark in front of an audience made up of many blacks. He issued another assessment his brainpower on CBS’s Face the Nation. “Oh, no, I don’t think he’s nuts. I’m just saying I wonder if he’s got the kind of balance — probably what I should have said is the balance to be president of the United States.” He also said that he thinks the media is soft on Biden’s tendency toward gaffes, adding that the press “would be going crazy” if say, Sarah Palin had made the vice-president’s now sort of infamous “chains” remark. If I recall correctly, Sarah Palin was criticized for saying she could see Russia from Alaska. Sorry, but all I can picture when the name Rudy Giuliani comes up is a guy in a dress on SNL, who was married to his cousin.
Rudy Giuliani No Longer Thinks Biden is ‘Nuts’ for ‘Chains’ Comment, Just Not Balanced to be President
Former VA Gov. Doug Wilder Says “Slavery Is Nothing to Joke About” But Said Nothing to “Shackles” References by GOP
Joe Biden’s “put y’all in chains” comment lives another day and now one prominent former black politician is giving his two cents. Former Virginia Gov. Doug Wilder, appeared on Fox News’ “Your World with Neil Cavuto” said “slavery is nothing to joke about,” when asked about Biden’s comment.
To be honest with you, Joe Biden is a gaffe machine and I have often wondered why in the world would Obama have picked him in the first place. Kinda makes you wonder how much Bill and Hillary Clinton are doubling over in laughter. The Obama campaign can’t afford to let Joe Biden loose. He will embarrass them, as he always has. Joe Biden is living proof that loose lips sink ships.
“Well, first of all it is divisive and certainly uncalled for,” Wilder said. “I don’t think the Obama administration needs that at this time. And, as you know, I have not been the most strong supporter of Joe Biden. And yet, we all know he’s gaffe-prone. But when you make a statement that says ‘They are going to put y’all back in chains,’ which means ‘I’m OK — not going to happen to me.’”
“We’ll work through it, but ‘y’all’ would be in chains,” Wilder continued. “Slavery is nothing to joke about. And the history of this nation’s involvement with slavery is nothing to pass off in a joke. And so let’s give him the benefit of the doubt by saying, ‘Well, he didn’t mean all of it,’ and his apologists are already out there saying it. But you can’t continue to make gaffe after gaffe after gaffe and believe that it’s going to be supportive of what you and the president are trying to do.” Source: Daily Caller
Don’t get me wrong, Biden’s comments weren’t out of line, but taken in the right context, he wasn’t being racist one iota. It’s funny because the audience was also made up of blacks, who didn’t seem to be bent out of shape about his quip. I don’t recall hearing Gov. Wilder criticize Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum and others for using the word “shackles.” Better yet, R&B legend Aretha Franklin has a song “Chain of Fools,” as well as gospel duo Mary Mary’s “Take Shackles Off My Feet” and I don’t think I heard peep out of him. Everyone knows that slavery is nothing to joke about, but guess what, some would call what’s going on in this country economic slavery.
