Food fight!!!! Tom Joyner has slammed Roland Martin over his perceived anti-gay tweets and his suspension from CNN. Here’s the entire post written by Tom Joyner on Black America Web:

A Letter to Roland: Make It Right

I think one of the things that makes the TJMS work is that, like a real family, we bring a variety of personalities, talents and flaws to the table, yet we accept our differences and roll with them. It only becomes a problem when one of our actions – or lack thereof – begins to detract from our overall goal, which is to entertain and empower black people.

As head of the family, I’ve sat back as long as I could, hoping I wouldn’t have to say anything. But now the time has come.

So, Roland, we love you and need you full force to be able to do what you do – represent us and our views on CNN and other arenas.  In order to continue your role on that show, on the speaking circuit, etc., it’s time for you to make a sincere apology to GLAAD (The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation). When people are offended by something we say or do, it doesn’t matter what our intentions are. The job of the offender is simply to apologize and learn a lesson about what to say or do going forward.

Your mission is greater than your principal.  It’s no longer about you. Now it’s grown into something bigger than you are, but only you can make right.

We love and appreciate what you do as a journalist, an analyst and commentator. You are a much -needed voice in the community and have the gift of being able to relate with everybody from the ‘hood to the White House.

We’ve gone through this with another family member who refused to turn around. I sure would hate to see pride silence another important voice.

Make it right, Roland, so we can move forward.

While I understand Tom Joyner’s position, couldn’t this have been a private conversation between he and Roland Martin? Why do we constantly have a need to air our dirty laundry in public? On the other hand, he may be trying to distance himself from Roland Martin so that his show won’t be boycotted by GLAAD. If so, did he throw his friend under a bus? Shows you how cutthroat the business is. Tom Joyner’s sidekick J. Anthony Brown and comedian Huggy Low Down are funny, but they have made some off-color gay jokes. Has Tom Joyner addressed that?

I didn’t think the tweets about David Beckham’s underwear advertisement were anti-gay but that’s just one set of comments and taken as a whole, as GLAAD has suggested, Roland Martin’s comments are disturbing. At least they can be interpreted as such. This dust-up is bigger than GLAAD. Roland Martin is now black-listed and that won’t work in his favor with CNN. He will disappear from their network slowly but surely. Roland Martin, on the other  hand, could end up marginalized like Tavis Smiley. Mark my words.

I thought Super Bowl 46 was relatively event-free until M.I.A. flipped a bird during her performance with Madonna during the half-time show and uttering the word shit. Now comes another firestorm, but this one erupted on Twitter with CNN contributor Roland Martin sending out some controversial tweets about  David Beckham’s H&M underwear ads. One tweet reads: “If a dude at your Super Bowl party is hyped about David Beckham’s H&M underwear ad smack the ish out of him!” Now the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) has called Martin out and want CNN to fire him for his alleged homophobia.

Personally, I don’t think the tweets were anti-gay in any way. What happened to freedom of speech? Is GLAAD going to attack everyone who makes a comment it doesn’t like? So, do we now have a gay police? Give me a break. Nothing Roland Martin tweeted rose to the level of homophobia. GLAAD, has published a report titled “Enough is Enough: Tell CNN to Fire Roland Martin,” in which the group says the tweets aren’t the only problem it has with Martin, butit is also part of a larger pattern of behavior:

Roland Martin has never compared being a soccer fan to being an alcoholic, the way he has compared being gay to being an alcoholic. Roland Martin has never bragged that his wife has led men and women away from the “soccer lifestyle,” the way he claims she has with gay people.

Roland Martin has never defended jokes about parents stabbing soccer-playing children, the way he defended jokes about parents stabbing gay children.

Based on this history, this doesn’t seem like a playful jab at what Martin considers an inferior sport.

It seems like a jab at what Martin considers an inferior community of people.

What I find offensive is Roland Martin cracking on soccer, as though it’s a mockery. I would like to educate him on the fact that soccer players are among the most physically fit athletes out there. At any given game, they run more than any football player and have less time to rest. So, it’s ignorant to crack on soccer players. I would venture to say Roland Martin couldn’t last five minutes in a soccer game.

UPDATE#1: CNN has suspended Roland Martin saying, “Roland Martin’s tweets were regrettable and offensive,” CNN said in a statement Wednesday afternoon in announcing Martin’s suspension. “Language that demeans is inconsistent with the values and culture of our organization, and is not tolerated. We have been giving careful consideration to this matter, and Roland will not be appearing on our air for the time being.”
