Chicago Teen Cornelius German Murdered Near President Obama’s Kenwood Home

Another teen has been murdered near President Obama’s Chicago home. Cornelius German,15, was murdered Monday night just four blocks from President Obama’s Kenwood home. This murder is a reminder of the deaths of Hadiya Pendleton and Rashad Pratt, who were murdered near the President’s home. Cornelius German, whose nickname was ‘Cornbread,’ was pronounced dead at the Cook County medical examiner’s office at 12:50 a.m. Tuesday. No suspects are in custody. The teen reportedly had trouble at school and had friends who were in gangs, the Chicago Tribune reports.

His mother admitted that her son rebelled against authority and hung out with gang members, but she was unhappy that Chicago police had so quickly called her son a gang member.

“This is not Hadiya Pendleton. This is Cornelius German, a boy affiliated with gangs,” Timika Rutledge-German said. “Police can’t say he was a known gangbanger. He hung with everybody because they were his homies.”

Police officials said the boy had “documented gang ties.” He also had a juvenile record that included arrests for armed robbery and findings of guilt for theft and battery, according to law enforcement sources.

Though his mother insisted her son was not in a gang, she did not deny his struggles. He was kicked out of Chicago Public Schools and put in alternative schools after he defied authority figures and developed an attitude problem, she said. He hung out with gang members, she added. But just two months ago he had earned his way back into Kenwood Academy High School, to the delight of his parents, who had high hopes that he was finally being given a chance to straighten out. Hundreds Pay Last Respects to Murdered Chicago Teen Hadiya Pendleton

Chicago teen Hadiya Pendleton, who was murdered last month, was laid to rest Saturday. Also in attendance at her funeral, which was held at the Greater Harvest Baptist Church, were First Lady Michelle Obama, Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Valerie Jarrett, Rev. Jesse Jackson and Education Secretary Arne Duncan. Prior to the service, Michelle Obama met privately with about 30 of the teenager’s friends and classmates, and then with members of her family, the Chicago Tribune reports.

Father Michael Pfleger posed an important question during the funeral, “when did we lose our soul?” He called Hadiya Pendleton an “innocent victim of gun violence.’’ Somebody knows who killed her and they need to speak up. That will be one less murderer on the streets of Chicago.

President Obama’s handwritten note to Hadiya Pendleton’s family was printed on the back of the funeral program:  “Dear Cleopatra and Nathaniel, Michelle and I just wanted you to know how heartbroken we are to have heard about Hadiya’s passing. We know that no words from us can soothe the pain, but rest assured that we are praying for you, and that we will continue to work as hard as we can to end this senseless violence. God Bless.”

How many more Hadiya Pendletons do we have to bury before something is done to curb the gun violence holding communities under siege? We can’t go back to business as usual. Too many young people are dying to gun violence. Far too many. Her mother, Cleopatra Cowley-Pendleton, said it best, “No mother, no father should ever have to experience this. I kept her living [saying she helped her daughter stay away from negative influences] When your children try to talk to you, listen. Don’t judge them. This should be a judge-free zone. You made them. You deal with that.”

SHOCK:  Hadiya Pendleton, 15, a honors student at King College Prep, who performed at President Obama’s inaugural events in Washington D.C. last week was fatally shot in a Chicago park.

Hadiya Pendleton had been released from school early Tuesday after an exam and was huddling under a canopy in a South Side park to escape the rain when she was shot in the back. Police said Hadiya Pendleton and another teen collapsed a block away in front of upscale homes on Oakenwalk Avenue.

There were reports that gang members were at the park but that Hadiya Pendleton was not a gang member. It seems that this promising young lady was an ‘unintended target’ when the gunman ran into the park and opened fire at 2:20 p.m., and then sped away in a waiting car, police say.

This is another senseless murder that occurred near President Obama’s Chicago home. You will recall Rashad Pratt was gunned down not far from the home. The Chicago Tribune reports, Hadiya Pendleton was a sophomore at King’s and had attended the inauguration where she performed at inaugural events with the school band and the Majorettes dance team.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Hadiya Pendleton. She was taken too soon. It’s time to take back out streets from thugs and gun violence.
