Quote of the Day: “About 47% of able-bodied people in the state of Maine don’t work.”

— Maine’s Republican Gov. Paul LePage quoted by the Bangor Daily News, echoing Mitt Romney’s infamous 47 percent insult made during the 2012 presidential campaign.

Yep, now the people of Maine really know how their governor feels about them. The Republican Party just can’t stop showing its true colors.

Poetic Justice: Mitt Romney to End Up with 47 Percent of the Popular Vote After 47 Percent Insult

Poetic Justice:  Mitt Romney to End Up with 47 Percent of the Popular Vote After 47 Percent Insult (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

We called it last week when the popular vote percentages for the presidential election showed Mitt Romney hovering around 47%. Well, the final tally will show just that 47.56% rounded off to 47%. Poetic justice, right? The non-partisan Cook Political Report predicts with certainty that with all of New York and California counted, Romney will end up below 47.5 percent of the vote. The split will be 51-47 percent. How ironic since Mitt Romney dismissed 47 percent of Americans as deadbeats.

Salt Lake Tribune Endorses Barack Obama, Says Mitt Romney in “Whatever Guise, Does Not Deserve a First” Term

The Salt Lake Tribune endorsed Barack Obama as it laid out a scathing rebuke of Mitt Romney — all the different versions of the GOP presidential candidate, in other words, too many Mitts:

“Sadly, it is not the only Romney, as his campaign for the White House has made abundantly clear, first in his servile courtship of the tea party in order to win the nomination, and now as the party’s shape-shifting nominee. From his embrace of the party’s radical right wing, to subsequent portrayals of himself as a moderate champion of the middle class, Romney has raised the most frequently asked question of the campaign: ‘Who is this guy, really, and what in the world does he truly believe?'”

In considering which candidate to endorse, The Salt Lake Tribune editorial board had hoped that Romney would exhibit the same talents for organization, pragmatic problem solving and inspired leadership that he displayed here more than a decade ago. Instead, we have watched him morph into a friend of the far right, then tack toward the center with breathtaking aplomb. Through a pair of presidential debates, Romney’s domestic agenda remains bereft of detail and worthy of mistrust.

Therefore, our endorsement must go to the incumbent, a competent leader who, against tough odds, has guided the country through catastrophe and set a course that, while rocky, is pointing toward a brighter day. The president has earned a second term. Romney, in whatever guise, does not deserve a first.

Obama Campaign’s New Ad Ties Romney’s ’47 Percent’ Remark with Release of 2011 Tax Return

The Obama campaign ties together Mitt Romney’s “47% moment” with the release of his 2011 tax return in a tough new ad:

Ann Romney, the Real Housewife of New Hampshire, said Republicans criticizing Mitt Ronney should stop and realize “how lucky” the party is to have him. Um, really Ann? Your husband trips all over himself, far worst than George W. Bush. She seems to have forgotten that he was not the first choice of many to go up against Barack Obama in the election. As Matt Dowd says, this was an arranged marriage, so Mitt Romney should be lucky the GOP embraced him.

Ann Romney spoke late this afternoon [Thursday] to about 200 people, mostly women, who’d gathered for a rally in the store room of a central Iowa furniture business.

“Wow, back in Iowa. Here we are again,” Romney said, to cheers and applause. “However, I don’t want it to be a 10-vote margin again. I want to have a bigger win, so let’s make sure in Iowa we win big in November.”

During her remarks to the crowd this afternoon, Mrs. Romney said it is “really hard for me as a wife” to watch the campaign unfold. Former Reagan speechwriter Peggy Noonan recently wrote that it’s “time for an intervention” in the Romney campaign. William Kristol, a conservative who is the editor of The Weekly Standard magazine, used the words “arrogant and stupid” to describe Romney’s comments about the “47 percent” of Americans who won’t vote for him.

During an interview early this evening with Radio Iowa, Mrs. Romney directly addressed her fellow Republicans who’ve criticized her husband.

“Stop it. This is hard. You want to try it? Get in the ring,” she said. “This is hard and, you know, it’s an important thing that we’re doing right now and it’s an important election and it is time for all Americans to realize how significant this election is and how lucky we are to have someone with Mitt’s qualifications and experience and know-how to be able to have the opportunity to run this country.” Source

Ann Romney needs to get used to the fact that many in the Republican Party really didn’t want her husband to become the nominee in the first place — Romneycare, tax returns, outsourcing record, offshore bank accounts and now the 47 percent insult to Americans he claims would prefer to be on government assistance. Ann Romney is living on an alternate universe if she thinks the criticism of her husband will stop because she says so. His campaign is a rolling disaster.

Pat Buchanan, Brother of Romney Adviser Bay Buchanan, Calls Obama “Drug Dealer of Welfare”

Pat Buchanan, brother of Romney adviser Bay Buchanan, is spewing racist venom again, calling President Obama a “drug dealer of welfare.’ No decent network wants Pat Buchanan, so of course, Fox News, which picks up the bottom-feeders was only too happy to oblige. He appeared on Greta Van Susteren’s show Tuesday night. The last thing the Romney campaign needs is vicious demagoguery. But why should we ask them to stop? Keep talking Pat Buchanan, keep talking….

“He wants permanent dependency, in my judgment, of all these folks…somehow getting benefits, benefits, benefits and paying no taxes.”

“We used to have FDR talking about relief being a narcotic, a subtle destroyer of the human spirit,” Buchanan said. “We got to get off this welfare, is what he said. And in that sense it’s a narcotic.

“Gov. Romney is the complete opposite,” Buchanan added. “We believe in temporary help for anybody that’s in trouble. You should have a floor of decency under every family. Unemployment should be temporary. Unemployment benefits should be temporary. Food stamps should be temporary. What are we doing with 47 million people permanently have to be fed by the government?” Source

That is such a flawed argument that will undoubtedly continue to sink Mitt Romney. Not all of the 47 percent of people who he claims depends on the government are Democrats and are lazy. That would be the same welfare Mitt Romney’s father, George Romney was on when his family came back to the US from Mexico where they fled to continue their polygamous lifestyle.  We blogged about George Romney getting welfare benefits as a child. The video is below (h/t Buzzfeed).

Obama Campaign New Video Highlights Reactions to Mitt Romney Insult that 47% of Americans Want Government Handout

I knew the Obama campaign would release an ad highlighting Mitt Romney insult saying 47 percent of Americans are lazy and depend on the government. David Corn from Mother Jones and James Carter IV (former president Jimmy Carter’s grandson) gave the Obama campaign a “heckuva gift.” The closed-door event was held in May 2012, at the home of hedge fund manager Marc Leder, who loves to host sex parties.

“I actually felt sick to my stomach,” one woman says in the video. “I don’t think anybody’s ever looking for a handout. I think that we all want chances and opportunities.” “That isn’t someone who I’m thinking, ‘Oh I want him as my president,” another woman says. Source

Fox News announces Mitt Romney will respond to the leaked video of comments he made at a fundraiser on Neil Cavuto’s  show at 4 p.m. EDT Tuesday. Like Neil Cavuto will ask him the tough questions. I don’t even want to watch that crap.  He dared Mother Jones to release the entire video and they called his bluff. What else is there to say to us? So much for the “kind, gentle and funny” Mitt that Ann Romney tried to pass him off as during the Republican convention.
