Jeremy Leshun Williams, 29, was charged with murder hours after the body of high school coach Brioni Jamaal Rutland was pulled from the Tennessee River in Alabama, according to the Florence Police Department’s Facebook page.
AL.com reports that Brioni Jamaal Rutland, 27, the former Deshler High School football star had returned to the school as a volunteer football, track and basketball coach. Rutland, of Tuscumbia, had been reported missing since Tuesday.
Police believe Rutland was stabbed or shot and then thrown from the deck of the Old Railroad Bridge in Sheffield, the TimesDaily reports. Concrete blocks were chained to his body when it was removed from the river, the TimesDaily reports. Sheffield Police Chief Greg Ray said, “We know he was weighed down, so this was not a suicide or accident.”
Jeremy Williams is being held in lieu of $500,000 bail in the Lauderdale County Detention Center. Brioni Jamaal Rutland also played football for the University of North Alabama in 2004. Another senseless murder.
