I came across a story of how Native American women are being targeted for sexual violence. Statistics show native women are 2.5 times more likely to be stalked than any other group in the population and sexual violence against them are perpetrated by non-native offenders at an astounding rate of 85%. That should send alarm bells ringing in your ears. To think how easy it is for anyone to ride onto a reservation commit rape and ride off without fear of being prosecuted in unthinkable.

What are we going to do about this? Recent developments to change the legislation as it related to those in native communities to have more legislative power to prosecute those who come on their land and rape their women and children have been met with great resistance from the government.

The authorization of the Violence Against Women’s Act in 2011 specifically provided for this but was resisted by the republicans. You can say I’m politicizing call it what you will violence against women supported by any party will always be violence against woemn. Those who have survived violence against women and who were abused and raped as children and as adults know what legislation and laws can do to bring relief that this won’t happen agin

When you got to bed tonight and kiss your children and hug them I want you to remember that women in native communities live in fear that their children can be raped by persons who are non native and who literally ride off into the sunset without fear of prosecution.

We have got to end the violence. We have got to end violence against all women in all communities. We have to end violence against  children.
