1 Arrested After Deadly Two-Vehicle Collision in Southeast Austin

AUSTIN (KXAN) — One person has been arrested after a two-vehicle collision in southeast Austin left one dead on New Year’s Day, the Austin Police Department said in a statement.

Shortly before 9 p.m. Jan. 1, APD responded to an accident between an SUV and a sedan driven by Benito Mondragon Mercado in the 3000 block of US 183 south, police said.

The passenger of the car with the Mondragon Mercado was taken to the hospital, where the passenger died, the report said. As of Tuesday, police had not identified the passenger.

The press release states that Mondragon Mercado was arrested for manslaughter while intoxicated.

This is the first fatal crash in Austin in 2023, police said. The plane crash was investigated on Tuesday.
