$1 million bond set for man accused of killing woman, who was 8 months pregnant, her unborn child

Prosecutors allege Kaylyn Hollins shot 20-year-old Jennifer Hernandez in September last year and also shot her 17-year-old boyfriend.

HOUSTON — Nearly four months after a young mother-to-be was gunned down in northern Harris County, her accused killer appeared in court Thursday morning.

Kaylyn Hollins, 20, is charged with capital murder in the shooting of 20-year-old Jennifer Hernandez, who was eight months pregnant, and her unborn child.

The judge set Hollins’ bail at $1 million for this charge and another $50,000 for the murder of Hernandez’s 17-year-old boyfriend, who survived.

The couple were shot multiple times on September 16 after leaving a gas station on West Airtex and Ella Boulevard. Hernandez and her child died.

Her boyfriend survived and described the shooter’s car. According to Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, he told investigators at the Harris County Sheriff’s Office that the shooter accelerated near them and fired multiple shots into their car. He said there was no argument before the shooting.

Family members told us that the victim was delighted with the baby and shower they had planned for this weekend. Instead, they found themselves planning a funeral.

The young woman they called “Nana” had just started her own manicure business.

“We are absolutely devastated… Nana was a wonderful daughter, wonderful sister and would have been a wonderful mother,” they wrote in a gofundme.com account set up to pay for funeral expenses.

The motive for the shooting is not clear. Hollins has a long list of charges that include aggravated assault with bodily harm, theft and evading arrest.
