Popular 1980s rapper Heavy D has died. He was 44, after reportedly taken to a hospital in California, where he died.

Dwight Arrington, known as popular 1980s rapper Heavy D dies at age 44. Heavy D was reportedly found conscious with breathing difficulties Tuesday morning in his California home after police were called there at 11:25 a.m. He was pronounced dead in the emergency room at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center Tuesday afternoon, according to the Los Angeles County coroner’s office. The cause of death has not yet been determined.

Heavy D began his hip-hop career in 1987 with the group Heavy D & the Boyz, with hits such as “Now That We Found Love” and “Overweight Lover in the House.”

It was reported by The Times’ Andrew Blankstein that Heavy D may have died of complications related to pneumonia. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family.
