Archbishop Desmond Tutu will attend Nelson Mandela’s funeral in Qunu after confusion over his invitation, a spokesman confirms. I was taken aback this morning upon learning that Archbishop Tutu had cancelled his flight because he wasn’t not invited. The spokesman for the South African government said that wasn’t the case and that Tutu had, in fact, been invited.
Nelson Mandela spent his first night out of prison in the home of Desmond Tutu and the two men were very good friends. The government had already slighted Archbishop Tutu, who has been vocal in his displeasure with the ANC, over not having him on the program for the Mandela memorial service. He was hurriedly given the role of pronouncing the benediction.
Desmond Tutu and Nelson Mandela lived on the same street in Soweto for a long time. Both men were also Nobel Peace prize winners. Among those invited to the anti-apartheid icon’s funeral are Oprah Winfrey, Prince Charles and Rev. Jesse Jackson.
