Protests rock Charlotte on Tuesday after Keith Lamont Scott, who is black, was killed in an officer-involved shooting as he sat in his car waiting for the school bus.
Brentley Vinson has been identified as the CMPD officer who fired the fatal shot. He is also black.
According to the Charlotte Observer, 16 police officers were injured Tuesday night as the protests turned violent.
Keith Lamont Scott’s daughter said he was reading a book as he sat in his car. The police claim they found a gun and not a book at the scene of the shooting. Charlotte Mecklenberg Police Chief Kerr Putney said the officer involved was “in plain clothes, wearing a vest and was accompanied by uniformed officers when they approached” Scott, the Charlotte Observer reports. Putney said it is not clear if Scott was pointing a gun at the officer when he was shot.
Putney said witnesses corroborated the police claims that they found a weapon. He also said Scott was given “loud, clear, verbal commands” to drop his weapon before the officer fatally shot him.
Hillary Clinton tweeted: “Keith Lamont Scott. Terence Crutcher. Too many others. This has got to end.”
