Twitter was left aghast after Bette Midler tweets that “women are the n-word of the world. Raped, beaten, enslaved, married off, worked like dumb animals,” echoing the lyrics of John Lennon’s song. But this is not going to end well because it was offensive when Lennon sang it and it’s offensive with this tweet.
Midler tweeted: “Women, are the n-word of the world.” Raped, beaten, enslaved, married off, worked like dumb animals; denied education and inheritance; enduring the pain and danger of childbirth and life IN SILENCE for THOUSANDS of years They are the most disrespected creatures on earth.”
I know Midler dabbles in comedy, but this isn’t funny one bit. It’s offensive. Women have been denigrated but I don’t think this means you invoke the n-word to explain your point. This is an unforced error by Bette Midler, who I consider a great entertainer.
