Incoming House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says it may be possible for a sitting president to be indicted i.e. Donald Trump as he wakes up to a new reality in Washington D.C. in which he will be held accountable for his actions.
During an interview on TODAY, Savannah Guthrie asked Pelosi, “Do you believe the special counsel should honor and observe the DOJ guidance that states a sitting president cannot be indicted?”
Pelosi responded: “I do not think that that is conclusive. No I do not… Let’s just see what Mueller does. Let’s spend our time getting results for the American people.”
Pelosi said that DOJ guidelines are not the law. She assured Americans that a president can definitely be indicted once he leaves office.
She also did not rule out the possibility that Democrats would seek to impeach Trump but signaled that they would wait to see what came out of Robert Mueller’s final report on the Russia probe.
“We have to wait and see what happens with the Mueller report. We shouldn’t be impeaching for a political reason, and we shouldn’t avoid impeachment for a political reason.”
“Everything indicates that a president can be indicted after he is no longer President of the United States.”
