WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) provided an update on Tuesday on three officers involved in a shooting in Dodge City.
The KBI says the Ford County Sheriff’s Office deputy, hospitalized in Wichita, underwent surgery on Tuesday and is currently in good condition. The Clark County Sheriff’s Office Deputy was released from the hospital on Tuesday and is recovering at home.
The Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP) soldier is also recovering from his injuries at home.
The condition of the woman involved in the shooting is improving, but she continues to be treated for serious injuries, according to the KBI.
The KBI says that on Monday, Clark County Sheriff’s Office deputies observed a blue Toyota Tundra driving through Minneola. The Tundra matched the description of a vehicle linked to a double homicide in Phoenix, Arizona.
Officers chased the vehicle north towards Dodge City. Deputies from the Ford County Sheriff’s Office and the KHP joined the chase. Once the suspect’s vehicle stopped, gunfire was exchanged. The shooting occurred between US Highway 50 and 113 Road, also known as Wyatt Earp Boulevard.
The KBI says suspect Leroy D. Malone, 39, was shot multiple times and was pronounced dead at the scene. Another woman received multiple gunshot wounds and was transported to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, where she is in critical condition.
The sheriff’s officers involved in the shooting are all on paid administrative leave pending further investigation. The investigation is ongoing.
