WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) — The Wichita Police Department warned local nursing homes and long-term facilities to be on high alert following a robbery Wednesday morning.
Officer Trevor Macy, of the Police Department, said at around 4:50 am officers were dispatched to an armed robbery call at a long-term care home in the block of 600 S. Maize Court.
Wichita officers arrived, an employee of the facility said he was working when he heard a knock on the front door. He said that as he opened the door, three suspects wearing a black nurse’s coat, one armed with a pistol, forcibly entered. The employee said two of the suspects tied her up. Then, all three stole various drugs before leaving.
The three left the facility in a silver sedan or small SUV waiting for them at Hayden & Maize Road. They set out south.
Macy didn’t have details about the types of drugs she was taking. He said this is the first incident he has heard of involving a robbed nursing home, but said police want to inform similar businesses of what happened so they can inform employees and have a plan in place. .
“It is important for employees and employers to be alert for suspicious activity, especially in the early morning or late night hours. It’s also a good idea to have a plan in place for situations like this and to hold regular safety meetings with staff to discuss these plans,” Macy said.
The WPD’s public information officer said companies can contact community law enforcement officers to come forward and assist with safety and security planning.
