In two days, a woman from Lamoni raised almost $2,000 to help children pay for school meals in Mount Ayr. The act of kindness came in response to a Facebook post. In a since-deleted Facebook post, Mount Ayr Community Schools said that starting February 1, meal accounts of students who owe the school more than $5 will be served packed lunches until the balance is paid. Abbey Hoffman lives outside the school district, but says her post broke her heart as a mom herself. “It felt very unfair to kids, no matter what their situation, to give them that boxed lunch and make them feel different,” Hoffman said. She commented on the post with her concerns and her response led to the creation of the “Every Kid Eats Together” fundraiser. People started sending her money on Venmo, adding up to more than $1,000 in less than 24 hours. “Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas. Some don’t even have family in the area. Southern Missouri,” Hoffman said. Hoffman says she is overwhelmed with kindness for the children. “Just seeing people step in, whether they have kids or not, is so important and so heartwarming,” Hoffman said. Superintendent Jason Shaffer says there was a miscommunication with the Facebook post and has ensured that each child will be served a hot meal. “The bottom line is that our policy is in place and we haven’t used the alternative meal this year. But the post was just something that came out that was meant for, you know, a few people,” Shaffer said. Due to growing support, Hoffman opened a bank account that people can donate directly to called “Every Kid Eats Together” at the American State Bank in Lamoni. The money raised is donated to the Mount Ayr School District and other nearby districts to help pay off student meal bill balances.
