Kansas City’s Wheatley Elementary loses heat

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The heat is off at a school on the east side of Kansas City.

The heating systems at Wheatley Elementary School, located at 25th Street and Agnes Avenue, shut down Thursday, sending students to two alternate locations for classes.

On Thursday, more than 300 Wheatley students attended classes at the Manual Career and Technical Center. On Friday they were sent to Central High School instead.

Kansas City Public Schools sent a message to parents Thursday evening that repairs were underway. A team of heating repairmen could be seen on the school grounds on Friday.

Central High School is a large building with a separate wing that is used for students at Wheatley Elementary School, according to KCPS spokesman Jonathan Solomon. Solomon added that things went well on Friday and the buses are still running on schedule.

Parents complained to FOX4 on Thursday that their students’ Chromebooks are still at Wheatley Elementary School, and without them, learning is much harder. Students in that school district don’t take their laptops home.

Solomon said the district plans to have the heat back on by Monday. They will need it to take classes at Wheatley Elementary as the maximum temperature on Monday is in the 20s.
