OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The AFC championship kit has arrived in metro Kansas City, but before it can open, the Chiefs need to win Sunday night.
Academy Sports and Outdoors has a locked room full of sealed boxes. Kansas City Chiefs fans are hoping to buy what’s inside this Sunday.
“Go Chiefs!” said fan Diana Ellis.
The Chiefs host the AFC Championship for the fifth year in a row. Fans say it’s time to “take it home.”
On Friday, Chiefs Kingdom showed support for their favorite team, sporting red photos and snapping photos in front of giant signs at Union Station.
“I feel like everyone is so connected and it brings everyone together,” fan Becca Schugart said.
“Together,” Ellis said. “We have no problems. Everyone comes together for everyone, so that’s cool.
Academy Sports plans to dress fans if the game sends the Chiefs to another Super Bowl. Until then, the AFC equipment door remains closed and the boxes remain sealed.
“It’s very quiet, quiet. This is a very covert agent here,” said store manager Kasie Jo Butrick.
“So we don’t actually open the items and take them out until we (conquer) victory. Right now, we have a couple, a few trusted employees who have been working on receiving them, tagging them, and preparing them for customers.
Butrick told FOX4 that there is a variety of items inside, such as T-shirts, hats and lanyards for men, women and children.
Butrick said Academy Sports in Overland Park would reopen its stores if the Chiefs win Sunday night.
“Until customers stop by or we run out of product,” Butrick said when asked how long they will remain open.
Phillip Weber said his son’s birthday is Sunday, match day. The only thing he asks is for the Chiefs to beat the Bengals.
“They won’t beat us four times, especially here,” said Weber. “It’s wonderful. This is just, it’s fun. I’m not going to go, but I’ll be there in spirit.”
The Chiefs host the Bengals Sunday night at Arrowhead Stadium. Kick-off set for 5.30pm
