Three months after her daughter was killed, a Kansas City, Missouri mother is still awaiting justice.
Just this week, KCPD and KC Mother’s in Charge called for an end to violent crime, following the second deadliest year on record.
Aisha Johnson says her children teased her for taking so many photos and videos of them.
“All their lives they’ve been saying, ‘You’re always taking pictures, you’re always taking pictures,'” she said. “If I’d never taken the photos, we wouldn’t have these memories.”
Now the photos and memories are all that remain of her daughter Era’Shae Johnson, who was shot and killed on October 17, 2022.
“It’s a tough pill to swallow. Both in my hand,” said Aisha Johnson. “To see her birth certificate and to get her death certificate.”
Some say time heals all wounds, but Johnson says this wound will never heal.
“A mother should never bury her child, ever. And so I will never be well again,” she said. “But never feeling, or being able to touch my daughter, that’s what I’m not okay with.”
There have been numerous reports of Kansas City’s high homicide rate, but what Johnson says some may not realize is that each new case delays his own recovery.
“Every time another homicide happens, my daughter’s case gets thrown out,” she said. “And so it’s like, ‘Okay, here we go again, back to square one.'”
