WICHITA – The Wichita State track and field team had eight victories in day two of the Herm Wilson Invitational. Maria Romero highlighted Saturday’s performance, running the fastest 1,000m in school history and winning the event in a time of 2:57.28. “Today was just a test to see what she could really do, and I was incredibly impressed with what she did today,” said remote coach Kirk Hunter. “I think she’s impressed everyone who knows her. Doing what she did today was amazing, so she’s declared herself a great contributor to this year’s distance learning program, and I’m really proud of her.” Romero made the decision to step away from being a multi-event athlete and focus on middle-distance events for her final collegiate season and now she leads the team in both the 800m and 1,000m. “With most people, I feel like I have time to get to know them as a runner to figure out what’s the best workout for them, but I don’t have time for her — zero,” Hunter said. “So I said, ‘we can’t screw it up. This is our only chance,’ and she’s just bought into everything every step forward, and you can see her progressing and being very strong in practice.” Also winning distance events, Bryce Merriman ran a personal best of 1:54.42 in the 800m to win by two seconds. Ababa Sullivan surpassed her PR from a week ago, running 9:52.94 to win the 3,000m. The Shockers earned a win in the high jump with Destiny Masters (1.75m/5’8.75″), Marissa Jensen (1.70m/5’7″) and Mattelyn Swartz (1.70m/5’7″) scoring 1-2 -3 for the women and Brady Palen (2.10m/6’10.75″) and Weston Lewis (2.10m/6’10.75″) went 1-2 for the men, tying their season records which ranked second in the conference and 39th in the NCAA.In the 60-yard hurdles, Joseph Holthusen got the better of Jaleel Montgomery, who traded hurdles wins all season indoors.Holthusen, a 2020 All-American in the event, improved his season best at 8.00 Montgomery placed second in 8.36 Ridge Estes scored his second consecutive victory, throwing over 16 meters for the second time (16.40m/53’9.75″), and Sadie’s women’s 4x400m relay Millard, Maria Romero, Lea Jerkovic and Ma’Liyah Anderson finished the match with an overall victory, running 4:07.75. The Shockers will split up next weekend for the South Dakota Invitational and Iowa State Classic on Saturday, February 4.
