Mikaela Shiffrin she was denied in her first attempt to tie the Alpine Ski World Cup win record by six hundredths of a second.
Shiffrin, trying to bond Ingemar StenmarkThe 86 world victories, led by 67 cents over the German Lena Duerr after the first of two slalom runs in Spindleruv Mlyn, Czech Republic on Sunday.
The last rider to go in moto two, Shiffrin’s lead over Duerr diminished as he neared the finish. He had dropped to 15 cents in the last intermediate split with 10 seconds left in the course.
Shiffrin crossed the line, saw she had finished six cents behind, opened her mouth, bobbed her head and put her hand on her helmet. It was the closest slalom defeat of her career, which included a record 52 World Cup slalom victories.

Duerr, 31, scored his second World Cup victory, 10 years after his first.
Shiffrin’s next bid to tie Stenmark, the Swedish legend of the 70s and 80s, won’t be until March.
Next up are the World Championships in France, starting February 6, which are separate from the World Cup.
Shiffrin’s next scheduled World Cup races are sprint races in Kvitfjell, Norway the first weekend in March or a giant slalom and slalom in Stenmark’s home country of Sweden March 10-11 before the his 28th birthday on March 13.
Shiffrin started last week tied Lindsey Vonn for second place on the career wins list at 82. She then rattled off wins on Wednesday and Thursday in the giant slalom at Kronplatz, Italy, and on Saturday in the first slalom at Spindleruv Mlyn, site of her 2011 World Cup debut at the age of 15.
He has 11 wins in 23 starts this season, his best season since his record 17 wins in the 2018-19 season.
