WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – The Kansas Department of Health and the Environment (KDHE) has issued a boil water advisory for the city of Garden Plain.
The City of Garden Plain says one of the water repairs failed and is working to correct the problem.
The KDHE states that customers should observe the following precautions until further notice:
- Boil water for one minute before drinking or preparing food, or use bottled water.
- Dispose of ice cubes and do not use ice from a home automatic ice maker.
- If your faucet water looks dirty, flush the water lines by running the water until it clears.
- Disinfect dishes and other food contact surfaces by soaking them for at least one minute in clean tap water that contains one teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon of water.
- Water used for bathing generally does not need to be boiled. Supervision of children is required when bathing so that water is not swallowed. People with severe cuts or rashes may want to see their doctors.
The advisory went into effect January 28 and will remain in effect until the conditions that placed the system at risk of bacterial contamination are resolved. KDHE officials issued the warning due to a line outage causing a loss of pressure in the system. Failure to maintain adequate pressure can result in residual chlorine leakage and bacterial contamination.
Regardless of whether the public water supplier or the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has announced a boil water warning, only KDHE can issue the revocation order after testing at a certified laboratory.
