OTTAWA, Kan. – The University of Ottawa track and field teams split the team and competed in two different events this weekend, the Wendy’s/Pittsburg State Invitational and the Herm Wilson Classic hosted by Wichita State. Four more school records were broken this weekend, after three school records were broken in the previous Ottawa meet at the Washburn Rust Buster Classic.
Wendy’s / Pittsburg State Invitational – Complete results
Jaylan Washington continued his strong start into 2023, surpassing his second indoor school record in Ottawa. Washington ran 21.92 in the 200m, breaking Clarence Anderson’s previous record of 22.06 set in 2012.
Kayron Johnson (14.17m) and Bryan Cooper (12.64m) both had PRs in the men’s triple jump. Johnson finished seventh out of 27 athletes and his distance of 14.17 m surpasses the NAIA national qualifying “B” standard.
Mumina Millington shattered her own school record set last week in the 400m with an improvement of more than a second to finish 11th at the PSU Invitational with a run of 57.94. Her time also made its mark on the NAIA National Qualifying “B” standard.
Jayonna Perry also improved on a school record in the 60m hurdles she set just last week, finishing 20th out of 48 athletes with a time of 9.31.
Destiny Escobar shaved a second off his 600-yard rushing time, finishing 11th at the PSU Invitational with a time of 1:32.71. With another second of improvement, she will compete for the school indoor record.
Jordyn Weems set a PR in the women’s 60m, with a time of 8.10. The women’s 4X400m relay team of Escobar, Millington, Perry and Weems set a seven second improvement over the previous indoor school record, setting the new time at 4:09.00.
Wichita State Herm Wilson Invitational – Complete results
Only a handful of Braves made the trip to Wichita for the Herm Wilson Invitational. Highlights from the meet include Isaac Kennard starting the short distance events with PR in both 200m (26.76s) and 400m (1:02.15s), and Kayla Whiteaker setting PR in 60m (8.87s) and 200m (31.22) women S).
Next: The Braves head to Topeka next weekend for the Washburn Open.
