The sleet and freezing rain that began Monday prompted closures and delays of schools and businesses across North Texas.
The Wichita Falls Independent School District announced Monday morning that it will not be holding classes on Tuesday. Several districts in the region have canceled Monday classes.
Wichita Falls and North Texas gear up for a wintry week with the season putting everything in its arsenal: ice, snow, sleet, freezing temperatures and chilly north winds.
“A long-lasting event with several days of freezing rain and sleet is likely to create potentially hazardous travel conditions on untreated roads through early this week,” the National Weather Service said in a forecast released early Sunday.
The NWS placed the area on a winter storm watch from 6 a.m. Monday through noon Wednesday.
After a mild Saturday, the incoming weather system made its presence known with much colder temperatures in North Texas on Sunday. For this region, the NWS forecast a slight chance of snow, freezing rain and sleet on Monday with the odds increasing for more than the same on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Parts of North Texas could rise up to a quarter inch of ice during the event.
Temperatures dropped below freezing on Sunday and are expected to stay at or below freezing through Wednesday. North wind with gusts up to 20 mph will feel colder.
Temperatures are expected to rise throughout the week, setting the stage for rain Wednesday through Thursday. The sun and warmer temperatures are expected to return by Friday.
