TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – A homeowner assistance program intended to help Kansans mortgage-bound during the COVID-19 pandemic will close soon when funds run out.
The Kansas Housing Resources Corporation announced on Monday, Jan. 30, that the Kansas Homeowner Assistance Fund — a federally funded temporary emergency program that supports homeowners struggling with COVID-19 — has sent nearly all of its funds and will close . The program has now entered its final funding phase, the first of three closure phases.
KHRC has encouraged homeowners in need to apply now while funding remains available.
“The economic impact of the pandemic continues to be felt by families and communities across the state,” said Ryan Vincent, executive director of the Kansas Housing Resources Corporation (KHRC), which administers the KHAF program. “This assistance has provided stable housing and preserved the dream of home ownership for more than 3,000 needy Kansas families.”
KHRC noted that KHAF was established through the American Rescue Plan Act and helps qualified homeowners stay current on their mortgage payments and avoid foreclosure. Those entitled are at least 30 days past due on their mortgage or property taxes and may receive assistance with paying mortgages, utility bills, property taxes and other charges associated with the delinquency.
Since the program’s launch in April 2022, KHRC has indicated that it has provided $39,886,389 to 3,549 homes.
KHRC said the program closure process will follow three stages:
- Final Funding Stage – Homeowners seeking KHAF support should apply as early as possible to be considered for final funding.
- Suspension Phase – Once the program receives enough applications to fully expand all KHAF funds, approval of new applications and re-certification will be subject to the availability of remaining funds. Applications submitted during the pending phase will be suspended and will not be reviewed or processed unless sufficient funds are available.
- Shutdown Phase – When all program funds are depleted, the program will shut down and stop accepting new applications.
