I’m so relieved that Fox will air the 2023 Super Bowl. I don’t think I could have handled listening to CBS’ Tony Romo analyzing another game. He vacillates from one play to another. First it’s certain that Joe Burrow and the Bengals will go to the Super Bowl, and the next comedy is all about the Chiefs.
Fox announcers, just call the game and limit your personal opinions, especially if those opinions are unfounded.
Come on Chiefs!

I can not wait
I’m a 76-year-old Kansas City native and lifelong Chiefs fan who had season tickets for the Chiefs’ very first season. I now happen to live 10 minutes from State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona where they will face the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LVII. It’s safe to say I’m over the moon.
I have fond memories of my late parents and aunts and uncles sharing personal stories about the Chiefs players they befriended in Len Dawson’s time. In fact, one of my uncles worked with Lenny before the show. Back then, it was normal to interact with players across the community. (I still have some of their autographs tucked away.)
If you travel here for the big game and see an old man wearing bright red Chiefs robes driving a royal blue Toyota Matrix with Chiefs and Kansas City Royals stickers all over it, be sure to honk and say hello. I will know who you are. (Full disclosure: I’m also a die-hard Royals fan and have had spring training season tickets for years. Don’t get me started.)

Don’t overreact
As an aging black man, I’ve certainly seen my share of police misconduct over the years. Indeed, I could fill this letter with personal examples that would explain why I should feel justified in distrusting all police officers, but that is not the purpose of this letter.
With the country on edge from the killing of yet another black man by overzealous cops, I want to urge those who resort to violence to express their anger to stop and think before they act. (Jan. 30, 2A, “Tyre Nichols Case Revives Calls for Change in Policing Culture”) I feel for good police officers who have worked tirelessly on a daily basis to connect with the communities they serve, just to see their efforts slowed down by cops like those in Memphis.
I got over my anger and mistrust of all police officers and learned to focus on understanding that we need the good ones now more than ever. After all, the alternative is anarchy.

The Star, like many newspapers, has experienced difficult moments in recent years. I haven’t been a fan of The Star for a few years for a variety of reasons. But I must acknowledge that the recent report on the fiasco in the tender for the design and construction of the new Kansas City International Airport Terminal is a monumental achievement in journalism. (January 26, 1A, “Secret $62 Million Kansas City Airport Legal Battle”) Without this article, this view of corrupt politics would not have been reported. The final chapter is not finished, but big credits to The Star for excellent reporting.
Will those guilty of this legal debacle face the consequences they deserve? We’ll see. In the meantime, stay on the case, Kansas City star.

Amendment 3, Missouri’s marijuana legalization initiative passed by a solid majority of voters in November, is one of the best such laws in the nation.
Contrary to what some seem to believe, municipal courts are subdivisions of the circuit courts in Missouri. (Jan. 20, 8A, Letters) When the amendment requires circuit courts to strike out marijuana offenses, the attorneys intend to include circuit court subdivisions, including municipal courts.
The drafting of amendment 3 has been the subject of much reflection and discussion. It is an example of the Missouri initiative process at its best.
