All products subject to the recall have the number “EST.54” within the USDA inspection mark, according to the USDA. FSIS discovered the possible contamination issue during a routine inspection when listeria was discovered on surfaces the product came into contact with. There have not yet been any confirmed reports of illnesses associated with these products, according to the USDA.
Eating food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, a serious infection that can affect the elderly, people with weak immune systems, and pregnant women and infants, according to the USDA. Though less common, people outside of these groups can also be affected.
Listeriosis can cause fever, body aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and seizures sometimes preceded by diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms, according to the USDA. Infection can cause miscarriages, stillbirths, premature births, or life-threatening infections of newborns. Also, serious and sometimes fatal infections can occur in the elderly and in people with weak immune systems. The infection caused by listeriosis is treated with antibiotics.
FSIS reports it is concerned that some of the product may end up in consumers’ refrigerators. Those who have purchased these products are advised to avoid eating them. Products must be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.
