City council votes to annex land to make way for a new school in SW Topeka

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – Auburn-Washburn Unified School District 437 will build a second middle school on a 93-acre property located in southwest Topeka.

“Voters out there have said that we want to build some new schools and we were happy to accommodate once they made that decision. And so it’s been a long process, but it’s been a great process. It’s going to be really great for those kids, those teachers, and the whole development area,” said Topeka City Council member Spencer Duncan.

Duncan said there was a major factor in selecting the future site of a new school.

“That’s where the earth was. I mean, you had to have a big enough footprint for those schools and luckily that land was there… and it was close to their other schools, so they didn’t have to go too far out of their area. So it worked out perfectly,” Duncan said.

Duncan also said he has already spoken to members of his district who had some questions about building another

“Mostly just questions about what the sidewalk will be like. Will there be water drainage problems? Will the road be maintained? And we’ve addressed all of those which I think pretty well and made sure that all of these questions are answered and so to date I think we’ve answered those and people are very happy with how it’s progressing,” Duncan said.

Duncan added that the current goal is for the new middle school to open in time for the 2025-26 school year.
