LAST TIME OUT
Wichita State suffered a 79-62 setback Sunday in East Carolina. With the win, East Carolina recorded their regular season win over the Shockers. Wichita State converted just 32.8% of its attempts, including just 2 of 13 from beyond the arc. Turnovers once again proved to make a difference. Eastern Carolina forced 25 Wichita State turnovers, 14 of them steals. The Pirates scored 34 points on those errors. The two teams combined to shoot 68 free throws with ECU going 28 for 40, the most by an opponent this season. Jane Asinde and Trajata Colbert he once again powered Wichita State, scoring 37 of 62 points. Asinde had a team-high 20 points with five rebounds, two assists, a block and a steal. Colbert recorded his fourth straight double-double with 17 points and a career-high 16 rebounds.
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN HURRICANE
Led by second year head coach Angie Nelp, Tulsa enters Wednesday matchup at 16-8 this season and 6-5 in American play. Tulsa boasts a high scoring offense, averaging 72.0 points on 42.5% shooting. The Golden Hurricanes are one of the best teams in the nation in three-point shooting, as they rank second nationally in three-point attempts and third in made three-point shots. Tulsa also ranks in the top 40 nationally in assists, field goal defense, defensive rebounds per game, blocks per game and three-point defense. Temira Poindexter leads Tulsa in scoring with 16.1 points, followed by Delanie Crawford with 11.5, Maya Mayberry with 11.0 and Maddie Bittle with 10.8 points per game.
THE SERIES VS. TULSA
Wichita State and Tulsa have met 29 times, starting with their first meeting on March 2, 1978. The Shockers dominated the all-time series, winning 21 of 29 meetings. Despite leading in the series all-time, Wichita State has lost its four games with Tulsa.
LAST MEETING
Behind a big comeback in the fourth quarter, Tulsa won their first fight of the season in Tulsa, 70-63, on January 4. Wichita State entered the fourth quarter seven-point lead, but the Hurricane outscored the Shockers, 28-14 in the final 10 minutes. Tulsa hit a season-high 12 three-pointers against the Shockers. Trajata Colbert scored a season-high 11 points, followed by DJ McCarty with 10. Jane Asinde grabbed 14 rebounds.
DEFEND YOURSELF
Wichita State boasts a top-70 defense in the first 25 games of the season. They held all but 10 opponents to under 38% shooting and only eight teams shot better than 32% from three-point range. Wichita State’s field defense is holding teams to just 37.5 percent, good for 60th nationally. Opponents only connect on 29.2% of their attempts from long range. Wichita State has held nine opponents under 60 points, including four under 50.
TRIS OF TALENTJane Asinde, DJ McCarty and Trajata Colbert are forming a powerful trio for the Shockers. All three average double-digits on the season and combine for 52.9% of Wichita State’s points on the offensive end. On the glass, they combine to pull down 21.9 rebounds per game. Defensively, the trio account for 61.0% (119 steals) of the team’s steals this season and 58.7% (44 blocks) of the team’s blocks.
RARE AIR ASINDEJane Asinde is one of only three players in the country averaging at least 10.0 points, 10.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game. DePaul’s Annesah Morrow and Texas A&M Corpus Christi’s Alecia Westbrook are the only other players posting these stats in 2022-23.
SEE DOUBLE
Wichita State senior Jane Asinde is averaging a double-double in 25 games this season with 12.7 points and 10.7 rebounds. The Uganda native is on course to finish the season with top-10 rebounding in a single season. His current 10.7 boards per game would rank seventh in school history. She is also looking to become the first Shocker to average a double-double in a season since Antionette Wells during the 2006-07 season, when she recorded 13.0 points and 10.4 rebounds.
WANTED FOR THEFT
Junior guard DJ McCarty and senior forward Jane Asinde were nuisances on defense as they tackled offense for 25 games. McCarty has recorded at least one steal in all but five games, and has more than 14 steals in 25 games. His 50 steals are a team-high. Asinde is second on the team with 47 steals and averaging 2.04 steals per game and she has the most steals in 13 games this season. They rank 4th and 5th in Americans for steals per game.
COLBERT CASH Trajata Colbert has improved dramatically over the past two years on the free throw line. The Georgia native began her career shooting 42.1% as a freshman, 61.1% as a sophomore and 50.9% as a COVID sophomore. In 2021-22 she is shooting career high 76.0% and in 25 games so far in 2022-23, she is 85 for 104 (81.7%). Colbert ranks fourth in the American in free throw percentage.

In 25 games Wichita State ranked in the top 70 nationally in the following categories: No. 22 in rebounding margin (7.7), no. 28 in free throws made per game (14.96), no. #43 in free throw attempts per game, #43 in offensive rebounds per game (13.9), #60 in field goal percentage (37.5), and #60 in defensive rebounds per game (27 ,5). Jane Asinde ranks 13th nationally in rebounds per game, 20th in total rebounds, 25th in defensive rebounds per game and 28th in offensive rebounds.
