TULSA, Okla. — A four-game farm sweep helped the Wichita State women’s tennis team build some early confidence and momentum. Now manager Colin Foster is eager to put his team to the test. The weekend’s games against Tulsa (Saturday) and Louisiana Tech (Sunday) at TU’s Michael D. Case Tennis Complex kick off a challenging stretch designed to challenge this team both physically and mentally. The Shockers (4-1 this spring) will play 10 straight or neutral games over the next month. Seven are against programs that ended last year with rankings of ITA national teams (top-75), including Tulsa (No. 46). “We’re going to get into a good rhythm in terms of the game, and we’re going to keep getting stronger and learning things about ourselves through the competition,” Foster said. Fans can follow live scores and video all weekend long: On Saturday, the Shockers put their four-game hitting streak on the line against last year’s American Athletic Conference runner-up, Tulsa (6-3) . Senior champion Laia Conde Monfort made the major singles and doubles draws at last fall’s ITA All-American Championship. The Shockers are 24-19 all-time against Tulsa but have lost their last three meetings. The last time they defeated the Hurricane on their home field was in 2017. Sunday’s opponent, LA Tech, won 18 games last spring and went out 6-1 this year. The Lady Techsters’ only loss came in Tulsa on January 14. Junior Leonie Schuknecht has a perfect 6-0 record at No. 1 singles and ranks seventh on the school’s career doubles hit list. The Shocker teams are 2-0 against LA Tech. The schools last played in the 2014-15 season opener (a 5-2 WSU victory at the Wichita Country Club). The other meeting occurred during the 1980-81 season. WSU opened the spring with a 6-1 loss to Kansas before blowing four home games against Oral Roberts (7-0), Drake (5-2), Abilene Christian (6-1) and UT Arlington (4 -0). Top singles player Jessica Anzo rested against ACU and UTA, but others emerged in her absence. Graduate student Linwei Kong (4-1 this spring) won four consecutive matches to split between the singles no. -line. The tandem of double n. Kong’s No. 1 and Kurahashi (3-0 in doubles) built on a solid fall tournament season that saw them advance to the quarterfinals of the ITA Central Region. “The girls have done an incredible job in the practice,” Foster said. “We’ve been at home and only played one game a week, so we’ve been able to train really hard in this first part of the season. Now, going away, let’s just hope we keep improving.”
