GRAND ISLAND, Neb. — Grand Island city leaders are sharing a message of growth.

The state of the city address took place Friday morning at the Bosselman Enterprise.

The recurring topic among the speakers was the Conestoga Mall.

The project is in the works and Woodsonia is responsible for the redevelopment of the 68-acre lot intended to house retailers, multi-family housing and a hotel.

The project is very important to the mayor of Grand Island, Roger Steele.

“My goal is to restore the Conestoga market to the vibrant engine of commerce it once was,” Steele said.

Regional Planning Director Chad Nabity reiterated the mall’s importance to the Grand Island community and what that would mean for the future.

“We have made a commitment, the board has approved, of $200,000 of our levy over the next 20 years,” Nabity said.

This is not the only place where growth will be seen. Hall County Airport Authority Executive Director Mike Olson spoke about the economic impact the airport has had over the past 15 years and what they hope to accomplish in the future.

“I’ve made it public that we’re pushing hard for Chicago service and potentially considering returning to Orlando (…) I’ve had some discussions with the airlines,” Olson said. “In fact two weeks ago right now I was at an Air Service Conference. I spoke to four airlines.”
