CRAWFORD COUNTY, Kansas. – Two men are in custody accused of killing a man from Weir, Kansas.
At approximately 2:30 pm on Friday, February 17, Pittsburg Police received a 911 call from Collin Gebford, 43, that someone had been shot. Police located the victim, David Mays, 51, of Weir, on the roadway near 1023 N. Main in Pittsburg. Mays suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the chest.
The Crawford County Sheriff’s Office and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation were called in to assist the Pittsburg police with the case. The Kansas Highway Patrol and Kansas Wildlife and Parks also cooperated in the investigation.
Gebford, the man who called 911, was arrested and placed in the Crawford County Jail on charges of first-degree attempted premeditated murder and manslaughter.
Authorities identified another man they said was involved. Travis Conness, 32, of Neosho, Mo., who according to police left the scene of the murder on Friday, was located today (Saturday, Feb. 18) and booked into the Crawford County Jail. He faces the same charges as Gebford, suspicion of attempted first degree premeditated murder and manslaughter.
Police say in the course of their investigation they determined there was a fight which resulted in Mays being shot and killed. An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday.
The case will be prosecuted by the Crawford County Attorney. All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
