KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A show in Kansas City, Missouri tells the story of Black Wall Street in the Greenwood neighborhood of Tulsa.
The sprawling, self-sufficient community was razed and bombed by a white mob just over a century ago.
Saturday night, the cast of “Deep Greenwood – Hidden Truth of Black Wall Street” will take audiences back 100 years to one of the darkest and most hidden moments in the country’s history.
It’s a story many Americans have never heard. Playwright Mia Walter wants to change that.
“It’s a great feeling to know that something you’ve researched for years and put your whole heart into to make sure people see the whole story is actually coming to light,” she said.
He began his research in 2012 and used historical court documents and interviews to piece together the full picture of what really happened for his oeuvre.
“I was in Tulsa when I had descendants there, and they finally came up to me when we had our interview and said, ‘Mia, don’t stop. Don’t stop. Tell the truth about what really happened, please don’t stop you, ”he said.
Actor and singer Shirley Murdock says the entire cast has a responsibility to tell this story.
“Glad to finally know what the truth is. You know, sometimes in our history things get altered,” Murdock said. “We don’t get the full weight of what happened. But you can’t fix what you don’t address.”
Actor Dion Burns agrees and hopes to dedicate this painful chapter of American history to future generations.
“A lot of history is suppressed,” Burns said. “If we got it early and figured out what made this country from the beginning, we could probably figure out how to make it better.”
