Jacie Hoyt’s Oklahoma State Cowgirls had to earn it for her, but they sure did in the end. The Pokes earned a 92-80 victory Saturday night at Texas Tech in three overtimes for Hoyt’s 100th career win.
“A game I will never forget!” Hoyt tweeted afterwards. “Our team was brave, resilient and tough as nails today. Accomplishments like this are not possible without hardworking players and staff who believe in the vision! I am blessed by all of the above…not to mention the admins and fans. Not done yet!”
The Cowgirls led after each of the first three quarters. That included a 47-43 lead going into the fourth quarter.
But the Lady Raiders weren’t about to let them enter their arena and emerge victorious with ease. In fact, Oklahoma State had to hit a free throw with 36 seconds left and come up with a defensive stoppage on the final regulation possession to force overtime.
Oklahoma State scored the first eight points of the first overtime to be in winning condition at the time. But Texas Tech answered with the last eight to extend it one more frame.
Neither team could separate in the second overtime, as each scored seven goals apiece to remain locked in a 76-76 tie. This brought them to a third OT.
The Cowgirls got the split and this time, finally, they kept it for Hoyt’s monumental victory. They outscored the Lady Raiders 16-4 in the final set by five extra minutes.
To reach the milestone, Hoyt compiled a 19-7 record in his initial season at the helm of Stillwater. This, combined with 81 total wins at her previous stop in Kansas City, pushed her to the 100-win plateau. He owns an overall record of 100-72 between those two stops.
