History
The University of Minnesota Duluth softball team was dealt their first losses of the season at the Emporia State Classic on Saturday afternoon. After losing to Oklahoma Baptist 4-2 and Newman University 5-2, the Bulldogs now move to an 8-2 record.
“We didn’t execute today. The things that made us successful the previous two weekends we didn’t do today.” said head coach Lynn Anderson. “It’s easy to take the wrong path after a day like today, but I know we are a team capable of great things, so we will adjust, simplify, refocus on our mental approach and attack tomorrow as if it were a new day. There is It’s a lot of the season remaining and we’ll use today as a great learning opportunity.”
Game 1: 4-2 loss to Oklahoma Baptist
It started out as a pitching battle as the Bulldogs offense was stopped by the Bison defense. Pitcher Bison would go on to strike out the first five batters of the game with the ball and clinch the last out of the second inning with one out at third base.
The Bulldogs saw no runners on base until the top of the fifth inning, when Corrie Weise singled on a bunt. Sophomore Nicole Schmitt walked, putting two runners on the base path for the Bulldogs. Sidney Zavoral then walked to the plate and hit another bumper, loading the bases. With the bases loaded, the Bulldogs scored two runs on an error by Bison to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead.
The Bison would answer with three runs of their own, taking the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. UMD tried to start a rally in the sixth inning, but it was called off shortly after a double play and strikeout by Oklahoma Baptist. Oklahoma Baptist would go on to score one more run, but the Bulldogs were left with two points to make the final score 4–2.
Second match: 5-2 loss
The Bulldogs got off to another slow start in the second game, seeing no base runners until the third inning. Freshman Kendal Jenkins kicked off the Bulldogs’ third inning with a home run to center field, which put the Bulldogs on the board.
UMD held Newman’s 2-1 lead until the top of the sixth inning, when Newman was able to score three more runs, increasing their lead to 5-1.
The Bulldogs would rally to score another in the sixth off freshman Morgan McMillian. McMillian blasted a single to center field scoring a run, but the Bulldogs fell short and fell to the Jets 5-2.

The Bulldogs will return to Topeka, KS on Sunday, February 19, where they will face the University of Missouri-St. Louis and Quincy. The games will take place at 10:00 and 14:30.
