CRAWFORD COUNTY – The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI), the Pittsburg Police Department and the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office are conducting an investigation into the death of a Weir, Kansas man, according to a KBI news release. The first indications are that the death is the result of a homicide and that two suspects are in custody.
Just after 2:30 p.m. Friday, Pittsburg Police received a 911 call from Collin Pal Gebford, 43, that someone had been shot. Police located the victim, David Duane Mays, 51, of Weir, Kan., in the roadway near 1023 N Main in Pittsburg. Mays suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the chest.
At approximately 3:00 pm, the Crawford County Sheriff requested the KBI Crime Scene Response Team and investigator. During the course of the investigation, it was established that there had been an altercation which resulted in gunfire.
Investigators identified another suspect who was questioned by police and released.

Police arrested Gebford on charges of first-degree attempted premeditated murder and manslaughter. Gebford is being held in the Earl of Crawford prison, according to the KBI.
Authorities also located and arrested Travis Blake Conness, 32, of Neosho, Missouri, on charges of first-degree attempted premeditated murder and manslaughter. Conness was arrested without incident and committed to the Crawford County Jail.
