Lloyd Miller was born at 4:20 a.m. on March 31, 1926 at Bethel Deaconess Hospital in Newton, Kansas. He died on February 14, 2023 in Wichita, Kansas.
The visitation will be held Monday, February 20, 2023, from 1:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the Frank Funeral Home in Wellington, Kansas.
Cemetery services will be held February 21, 2023 at 11:00 am at the Kansas Veterans Cemetery in Winfield, Kansas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Murl and Lucile Miller, a son Lloyd Miller Jr., his sisters Virginia Hulpieu and Beverly Hiebert, his brother Kenneth Miller, and his house wife, Donna Miller.
He is survived by 3 grandchildren, Gynia Crane, Marva Hiebert and Lori Seron and 6 grandchildren, Mitchell Miller, Roger Miller, Russell Miller, Gordon Hulpieu, Quinton Hiebert and Jay Hiebert.
MUSIC WAS HIS LIFE!
He started playing the piano at age 5, played church at age 7, and was the church pianist at age 12. At the age of 17, he played a piano audition with 20 songs and got a grade of 1+.
This was interrupted by the Second World War. He underwent basic field artillery training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Going overseas, he passed New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and landed in Luzon, Philippines. He was in service for a total of 25 months, spending 18 months overseas.
After returning home, he completed a Bachelor of Music and Piano Performance at Washburn Municipal University in Topeka, Kansas. He has received two honors being inducted into Pi Gamma Mu (Social Sciences) and Mu Alpha Pi (Music). He subsequently earned a Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Wichita and then a Master of Music Education from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois.
He began teaching music in Zenda and Hazelton, Kansas, then instrumental music in Borger, Texas and Arkansas City, Kansas. After further education in administration, he served as principal in Nashville and Zenda, Kansas. He has coached women’s sports in both Denison and Burnette, Kansas.
During this time, he received his seminary degree from Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary, Evanston, Illinois.
After retirement, he became involved with the Veterans of Foreign Wars organization. He has served as commander of the Newton and Wellington posts, as quartermaster for the Newton and Wellington posts, and as chaplain for both Wellington and Wichita. He also served as chaplain in the Fifth District and was Kansas State Chaplain for 8 years during which time he dedicated all four state Veterans Cemeteries in Dodge City, WaKeeney, Winfield and Manhattan. Lloyd also served as a Western Conference chaplain for 2 years and he and his wife Donna both volunteered at the Kansas Veterans Home in Winfield for a total of 20 years.
A memorial was set up with the Kansas Veterans Home in Winfield, Kansas in place of the flowers.
