Pima Aztecs Roundup: Women’s hoop wins 10th of last 12 games

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

The Pima Community College women’s basketball team (21-6, 14-5 in ACCAC) earned another ACCAC conference road win on Saturday, beating Glendale Community College (5-21, 3-16).

The Aztecs broke away in the second half to beat the Gauchos 76-50. The Aztecs have won 10 of their last 12 games.

Pima led 27-22 at halftime and outscored the Gauchos 23-11 in the third quarter and 26-17 in the fourth.

Second year Luisa Chávez (Rio Rico grad) led the way with 14 points along with six rebounds, five assists and three steals.

Second year Angel Addleman (Palo Verde) makes a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. He also added seven assists and two steals.

Second year Matehya Aberle he finished with 10 points and eight rebounds and sophomore Camilla Norton he went 3-of-5 from 3-point range and finished with 10 points off the bench. Freshman Taina Lee contributed eight points.

The Aztecs swept their head-to-head matchups with the Gauchos when Pima won 79-62 on January 14 at West Campus Aztec Gym.

The Aztecs will return to West Campus Aztec Gymnasium on Wednesday when they face Chandler-Gilbert Community College. Tipoff is at 7.30pm

MEN’S BASKETBALL

The Pima men’s team (21-6, 13-6 in ACCAC) won in Glendale (11-15, 6-13) after suffering a loss Wednesday at the Arizona Western.

The Aztecs No. 15 had a 19-point lead at halftime and went on to beat the Gauchos 94-72. It was the first time the Aztecs scored more than 90 points in February. Pima led 54-35 at halftime and outscored Glendale 40-37 in the second half.

Second year Traivar Jackson added to his Pima career point total when he hit 29 points on 13 on 18 shooting. He completed his double-double with 12 rebounds and also added six assists, five steals and two blocks.

Freshman Jaylen Alexander he went 6 of 7 from the field and had 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Freshman Mike Papa hit three 3-pointers and finished with 15 points and six rebounds. Freshman Jamison Kay he contributed 12 points and six rebounds off the bench. He went 6 of 8 from the field.

The Aztecs swept the head-to-head encounters with the Gauchos. They won their first game 99-96 on January 14 at West Campus Aztec Gym.

Pima will return to West Campus Aztec Gymnasium on Wednesday when he hosts Chandler-Gilbert at 5:30pm

SOFTBALL

The Pima softball team (8-7, 5-1 in ACCAC) had two run-rule wins Saturday at West Campus Aztec Softball Field against Scottsdale Community College (1-5, 1-5).

The Aztecs scored 28 points in games and got a big production from the freshman Mallory Zylinski-Wrobel (Sahuarita), who finished the day going 5 for 7 with eight RBI and two runs scored. Freshman Camilla Zepeda (Tucson High) went 3 for 6 with three RBI and five runs scored. Freshman Wendy Castro (Canyon del Oro) played well on both sides of the diamond in the second game.

Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 13, Scottsdale CC Artichokes 5 (6 innings): The Aztecs took the lead and secured the run rule victory with five runs in the sixth inning. Second year Analysa Gomez (Rincon/University) hit an RBI single to score fellow sophomores Elisa Munoz (Salpointe Catholic) for 9-5. Three batters later, Zylinski-Wrobel hit a three-run homer to tackle Zepeda and pinch-runner Missey Galloway to put the score at 12-5. Freshman Mine Chacon (Tucson High) hit a triple with two outs and scored on an error to seal it.

Down 4-3 in the fourth inning, the Aztecs capitalized on an error and scored two runs to take the lead again. Gomez, Zepeda and Zylinski-Wrobel had RBI as the Aztecs brought in five runs in the inning to go up 8-4.

Wrobel finished the game 3 for 4 with six RBI and one run while Gomez went 2 for 3 with two RBI and one run. Munoz, Zepeda, Chacon and sophomores My Casadei (Tanque Verde) each scored two points in the game.

Freshmen Genesis Zazueta (Tucson High) got the win (3-3) by pitching all six innings while giving up five runs (five earned) on 12 hits with three walks.

Game 2: Pima CC Aztecs 15, Scottsdale CC Artichokes 1 (5 innings): Castro hit a two-run RBI double as part of a six-run second inning. He also had an RBI single in the fourth inning to make it 10-1. The Aztecs scored nine runs in the fourth inning. Castro went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored.

He also made his mound work to get the win (3-0) after pitching all five innings while giving up one run (unearned) on five hits with three strikeouts and no walks.

Second year Alexander Castro he hit two RBI doubles in each of the second and fourth innings to go 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a run scored.

Zepeda hit a two-run RBI single in the fourth inning and finished the game going 2-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored. Zylinski-Wrobel had two RBI two-runs in the fourth as she went 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run.

The Aztecs will play away for the next two doubleheaders. They will be at Mesa Community College on Tuesday for an ACCAC conference meeting. The first match starts at 1pm

BASEBALL

The Pima baseball team (11-4) closed its series against Community Christian College on Saturday at West Campus Aztec Baseball Field.

The Aztecs took two of three from the Saints to win 12-2 to get the run rule win in seven innings.

With the score 2-2 in the fourth inning, the Aztecs scored four runs in the inning to finally take the lead. The Aztecs loaded the bases with one out as a freshman Sterling Albrand he hit a two-run RBI single to lead in freshmen Brant Kragel AND Antonio Avila. Freshman Elijah Reeves (Marana) followed with an RBI sacrifice fly to lead the sophomore Andrew Maxwell. Freshman Alexander Castro (Pusch Ridge) finished the inning with an RBI single to score Albrand to make it 6-2.

The Aztecs tacked on five runs in the sixth inning. Second year Gage Mestas hit a two-run RBI triple, leading Reeves and the freshman Austin Madsen (Canyon del Oro) for 9-2. Kragel contributed to the inning with a two-run RBI single to drive around Mestas and sophomore Luis Garcia (Salpointe Catholic).

The Aztecs sealed it in the seventh inning when Mestas hit an RBI double to score Reeves.

Mestas finished the game going 2 for 5 with three RBI and one run scored while Albrand went 3 for 4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Kragel was 2 for 3 with two RBI and one run. Castro closed out the game going 2 for 2 with two RBIs and two walks. Reeves and Avila each scored two points.

Second year Matthew Cornelius he got the win (3-1) by pitching five innings while giving up two runs (none earned) on four hits with eight strikeouts and one walk. Second year Dayne Pengelly he pitched the final two innings giving up one hit with three strikeouts.

The Aztecs hit the road for an ACCAC doubleheader at Cochise College on Tuesday. The first game starts at noon.

TRACK AND FIELD

The Pima men’s and women’s track and field teams competed in the final indoor meet of the regular season on Friday at the NAU Tune-Up in Flagstaff.

Second year Tristan Spalding (Palo Verde) broke his own Pima school record in the 200m dash to take first place with a time of 21.60 seconds. He broke the record the week before at the Gaucho Indoor Invitational with a time of 21.70. Spalding claimed four indoor school records in five fights.

Freshman Abraham Valencia (Palo Verde) earned a national qualifying time in the one mile race with a time of 4 minutes 27.97 seconds.

Second year Trey Tintinger she improved on her national qualifying mark in the high jump by taking first place with a mark of 2.11 meters (6 feet, 11 inches). She improved on her mark from 2.05 meters (6-8.75) set January 28 at the PVCC Indoor Invitational.

The Aztecs will compete in the NJCAA National Indoor Championships March 3-4 at Washburn University in Topeka, Kan.
