TULSA, Oklahoma. A little vitamin D and a few extra wins have both done wonders for the collective mood within the Wichita State women’s tennis program. Competing outdoors for the first time this spring, the Shockers beat off Louisiana Tech, 6-1, on double neutral court Sunday afternoon at Oral Roberts University’s Bernis Duke Tennis Complex. “For our first outdoor game, I was impressed with how quickly we acclimatised,” said coach Colin Foster. “In doubles, there were some mistakes at the start but then we really got stuck.” WSU (5-2) secured the doubles point along with games at no. his second loss. The effort came less than 24 hours after a 4-3 setback against conference rival Tulsa. “After yesterday’s game we talked about trusting our picks and staying even aggressive,” Foster said. “We did it today. We won many close sets and were pushed on every court. It was a great rebounding performance after a tough and physical match yesterday.” Leading 1-0 in singles, the Shockers extended their lead to 3-1 when Natsumi Kurahashi (4-2 this spring) and Kristina Kudryavtseva (6-1) both won in straight sets. Theodora Chantava (5-1) survived the first set tiebreak at number 5 in singles to win 7-6(3), 6-2 to officially clinch doubles. Lingwei Kong (5-2) and Harriet Hamilton (4-0) each fought back after first set losses to win their respective matches in 10-point tiebreaks to push the final margin to 6-1. On field no. 6, Hamilton played with his back to the wall for the better part of the half hour, winning back-to-back tiebreaks to complete a 5-7, 7-6 (3), (10-5) comeback victory. The Shockers return to Oklahoma State next weekend for doubles against Oklahoma State (Friday, 5:00 PM CT) and South Carolina (Saturday, 10:30 AM) at OSU’s Greenwood Tennis Center.
