Pretty cool that downtown Wichita Falls has recently shown some love.
Since I moved here in 2007, downtown Wichita Falls has only gotten better. More and more businesses are springing up. Some of my favorite restaurants are downtown. We now have another official Texas Historical Commission historic district.
This is now Wichita County’s Third Historic District. Combining Morningside, The Depot Square, we now have the Indiana Avenue Historic District. BTW, I know a lot of people were sharing the Facebook status above, but did you actually click the link for the Texas Historical Commission?
This thing is 82 PAGES! Highly detailed for the entire history of this area of downtown Wichita Falls. The properties that are now part of this district come from addresses from 900 to 1008 Indiana Avenue. Twelve buildings in total are part of this historic district.
I love looking at old school photos of Wichita Falls and what downtown looked like in the past. Check out a bunch of old school postcards, skylines, and proposed plans for Wichita Falls starting on page 46 of the report. What’s crazy to me, the Wichita Theater looks exactly as it does now in the 1980 photo. However, this is the time it was showing movies. It appears that “The Shining” was the movie showing that particular weekend.

The Texas Historical Commission apparently officially recognizes thirteen areas in Wichita County, three of which are districts. The other ten are historic buildings. If you are interested in more history of our city. Search Wichita County on the Texas Historical Commission website.
Weird movie commercials about Wichita Falls
Check out some of the ways Wichita Falls movie theaters used to advertise back in the day. Let me know if you have any more so I can add them later.
This Wichita Falls home was once a recording studio
Wichita Falls was formerly home to the Nesman Studio. Che has had some very famous clients over the years, including Buddy Holly. Today, however, the recording studio is gone and is just a house at 3108 York Avenue. Check it out below.
