WICHITA FALLS (KFDX/KJTL) — Going to the dentist is never really a fun experience, but these Midwestern State students have made their little patients ages four to 12 as comfortable as possible.
“We’re doing a, it’s like a benefit since it’s called the ‘Give Kids a Smile’ day and it’s where kids can come from four to 12 years old to get a free dental cleaning, so we’re offering x-rays and other stuff like that” senior dental student Veronica Thorton said.
Not to mention completely free. Thornton said examining children this age can have multiple benefits.
“This is also why we like to offer these cleanings for free because oral health is also a telltale sign of your overall health and we also like to meet with them as early as possible so we can give parents the right idea of how to prevent cavities on things they don’t even think about,” Thorton said.
Thornton said that not only families benefit from this service, but students as well.
“We are elderly and we need to have a certain number of patients, child patients to be able to graduate so that also helps us to be able to see as many children and bring more because we have a lot of patients who come here but most of them are older” Thorton said.
She said working on these kiddos can also help prepare students who want to work in a different field.
“So some of us are thinking about getting into pediatrics, and that would give them a better idea of what it’s going to be like because it’s a lot more hectic and it’s just a little bit different than cleaning as an adult,” Thorton said.
