Bishop Miege High School senior Alena Gillespie was named Kansas Student Journalist of the Year by the Kansas Scholastic Press Association.
Gillespie was surprised by the news by her adviser Sarah McCambridge and KSPA Executive Director Eric Thomas at halftime of the men’s basketball game Tuesday night.
Not only was Gillespie the winner in Class 3A/4A, he was also named the overall state winner.
This is the eighth time in the past decade that a Johnson County student has been named KSPA Statewide Journalist of the Year.
Gillespie served on the staff of The Miegian, the school’s student newspaper, for three years and was managing editor of The Miegian’s website for the past two years.
“She’s one of those leaders who is so committed but also very humble,” McCambridge told the Post. “She’s never the loudest person in the room, but she wants to make sure that whatever we’re doing, we’re doing it really well.”
Gillespie will now go on to compete for the Journalism Education Association’s National Journalist of the Year award.
