WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) — Wichita State University students and staff got a taste of black history Wednesday as they gathered in Shocker Dining Hall.
The menu featured meals selected by three staff members: Dr. Kevin Harrison, Dr. Marché Fleming-Randle, and Riccardo Harris, director of Wichita Gear Up.
Better known as Dr. Marché, the Vice President and Chief Diversity Officer said she organized the event to highlight African-American history and showcase the importance all minorities have in American history.
“The biggest benefit from this is that it’s not just the African American experience, but all marginalized populations. I need them to understand that they have contributed to this great nation that doesn’t always give credit to all of its people that make it great,” said Dr. Marché.
From music to poetry to food, each piece of the celebration had a special meaning.
“Food is educational in two respects. You have food for the soul and you have food for the soul,” said Dr. Harrison, director of diversity, equity and inclusion at WSU. “Food for the soul was what we talked about and music. Soul Food is about the transition from slavery to Southern blacks turning nothing into something.
Dr. Marche said she had the support of all the staff in planning the event. She said she also hopes it becomes an annual tradition.
